Attempt to Bomb Abuja Barracks Foiled as IED Explodes, Kills Suspect, Injures Two

ABUJA — A bombing attempt targeting the Mogadishu Military Barracks in Abuja was thwarted on May 26, 2025, when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated before the attacker could enter the facility. The explosion killed the suspect and injured two bystanders, according to reports from security sources.

The incident occurred when alert military police and intelligence officers at the barracks checkpoint grew suspicious of the individual’s behavior and the suspicious item he was carrying. They ordered him to move away from the checkpoint, prompting the IED to detonate a short distance away near the bridge bypass.

“The explosion happened just seconds after the suspect was told to step away,” a source told Vanguard. “Sadly, two civilians nearby were injured and rushed to a military hospital.”

As of press time, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement. However, the FCT Police Command confirmed the blast occurred near the Mararaba–Nyanya bypass, close to the barracks perimeter.

Police Confirm Scene Cordoned Off for Forensic Investigation

In an official statement, SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed the timeline of the event:

“On May 26, 2025, at approximately 2:50 p.m., the command received a distress report about an explosion along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass. Our Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit responded immediately, securing the scene for forensic analysis.”

The police reported that one injured male victim was evacuated to a hospital for medical care.
