Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 81, according to a statement posted by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, on Saturday.

Announcing the news via social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Bashir Ahmad wrote:

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.

May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

President Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, was also the country’s military head of state between 1983 and 1985, earning him a unique place in Nigeria’s political history.

Widely known for his anti-corruption stance and military-style leadership, Buhari’s administration focused on fighting graft, boosting internal security, and reviving the Nigerian economy, although critics cited concerns over rising debt and increasing hardship during his tenure.

The former military general had been out of the spotlight since handing over power to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2023. He had reportedly been receiving medical care abroad for an undisclosed illness in recent months.

Burial Plans Underway

His family is expected to release further details about his burial, which will take place in accordance with Islamic rites, likely in either London or his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, pending final arrangements.

Condolences have begun pouring in from political leaders, diplomats, and citizens across the country and beyond.
