Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting host communities from exploitation by oil companies while ensuring uninterrupted oil production.
Speaking in Asaba on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited, Oborevwori emphasized that Delta State, as the nation’s leading oil producer, relies heavily on oil revenue and cannot afford disruptions.
“If oil production remains high, Delta State benefits. I will not allow oil companies to oppress their host communities, nor will I allow host communities to disrupt oil production. Disruptions hurt everyone,” he said.
He praised Chevron for its contributions to the state’s economy and development but urged the company to do more for host communities, particularly in providing basic amenities like electricity and water. The governor mentioned recent concerns raised by Itsekiri leaders and stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving disputes.
“A few days ago, the people wanted to protest, and I intervened because I believe in dialogue. You have been with these communities for years and can manage them. Listen to their concerns, fulfill the promises you can, and explain your limitations when necessary,” he advised.
Oborevwori also called on Chevron to improve employment opportunities for locals, particularly in management roles, rather than just offering casual jobs.
“How many of our people hold top management positions in Chevron? Very few. We need you to elevate our people, not just employ them as casual workers. When there are job openings, prioritize the host communities—they deserve it,” he stated.
He assured investors of a business-friendly environment in Delta State, emphasizing that the state is safe for investment.
In response, Chevron Nigeria Limited’s Chairman and Managing Director, Jim Swartz, reaffirmed the company’s strong ties with Delta State, pledging continued partnership and investment.
“We have operated in Nigeria for over six decades, most of those years in partnership with Delta State. Our footprint here is significant—Escravos is our operational home base, and Warri serves as our administrative and logistics hub. This state is home to Chevron Nigeria Limited,” Swartz said.
He highlighted the company’s contributions, including the construction of cottage hospitals, riverboat clinics, classroom blocks, water projects, teachers’ quarters, and town halls, reaffirming Chevron’s commitment to supporting the state’s development.
