Google celebrated the 20th anniversary of Google Maps, a service now used by over 2 billion monthly users worldwide. In a statement, the tech giant emphasized how the app has become an essential tool, enabling users to navigate confidently and discover new places.
Over the years, Google Maps has introduced several new features, including personalized recommendations powered by Gemini, a “Directory” tab to help travelers navigate airports, and augmented reality capabilities for real-time insights into surroundings. The app now also helps users find the cheapest petrol stations nearby.
Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Google West Africa, noted that Google Maps has evolved from a basic mapping tool to a dynamic platform for exploration and discovery.
To mark the milestone, Google revealed a list of the most reviewed places in Nigeria. Top-rated locations include popular restaurants such as Mega Chicken, Farmcity Lekki Lounge, and Hard Rock Cafe, as well as cafes like Flowershop Cafe and Oliver’s Café. Iconic visitor attractions such as Oniru Private Beach and Fela’s Shrine in Ikeja, along with parks like City Park in Abuja and the National Museum in Benin City, also received significant attention.
