Governor Ahmed Aliyu Commissions ₦14 Billion Water Scheme to Tackle Shortage in Sokoto

ALIYU

SOKOTO, NIGERIA — In a major infrastructure milestone, Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State on Wednesday commissioned the Tamaje Water Scheme, a critical component of a ₦14.1 billion water project aimed at delivering clean and safe drinking water to thousands of residents.

The project, located in Tamaje, is one of six major water schemes under development across the state capital and surrounding areas. Once fully operational, the schemes will collectively supply over 40 million gallons of water per day, significantly improving access to potable water amid Sokoto’s growing urban population.

At the commissioning ceremony, Aliyu described the project as a “critical milestone” and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing water scarcity as a public health and economic priority.

“Access to clean and potable water is not just a basic necessity; it is a fundamental human right,” the governor declared.

Key Project Details

  • Tamaje Water Scheme capacity: 3 million gallons per day
  • Total schemes under development: 6 (including Tamaje, Gagi, Mana, Old Airport, Runjin Sambo, and Ruga Liman)
  • Total combined output: 40 million gallons per day (once completed)

Acknowledging Past Leadership and National Collaboration

Governor Aliyu paid tribute to former governor and current senator Aliyu Wamakko, crediting him for initiating the original project vision. He noted the project as a continuation and expansion of efforts started under previous administrations.

He also welcomed Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo to the commissioning event as a special guest of honour, showcasing a spirit of interstate collaboration in public infrastructure delivery.

“We are building on the solid foundation laid by the previous administration,” he said.

Call for Civic Responsibility and Sustainability

Aliyu urged residents to protect and maintain the water infrastructure, warning against vandalism and neglect.

“Protect this facility as your own. It is for your health, your families, and the future of Sokoto,” he emphasized.

The governor also assured that the remaining four schemes will be completed soon, and pledged continued investment in the Sokoto State Water Board, including resolving power supply issues that affect water distribution.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his ongoing leadership and pledged Sokoto’s full support for the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Edo Governor Praises Development Efforts

Speaking at the event, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State praised his counterpart for prioritizing people-oriented projects, aligning his work with President Tinubu’s vision for improved living standards.

“Governor Aliyu is clearly working in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Okpebholo said.
