Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has clarified the reason behind his early morning visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) collation centre in Benin City. On Sunday morning, Obaseki arrived at the INEC office at 2 a.m., following reports that the collation process had been halted. He was later escorted out by police, led by Deputy Inspector General Frank Mba, following protests from All Progressives Congress (APC) members who demanded his removal from the premises.

Speaking at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Situation Room, Obaseki explained that he sought answers after receiving reports that INEC had stopped the collation and that PDP agents were being denied entry. He contacted the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) but received no response, prompting him to visit the collation centre in person.

Obaseki stated that no collation activities were ongoing when he arrived and demanded that INEC issue a public statement on the situation. Following discussions with DIG Mba, INEC eventually released a statement at 5 a.m., announcing that the collation process would resume at 10 a.m.

The governor emphasized that his visit aimed to seek clarity and transparency from INEC, as no public information had been provided regarding the halted collation process.
