The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has highlighted unemployment as a major factor contributing to kidnapping, militancy, and other social vices in the country. Speaking at the launch of the Labour Employment and Empowerment Programme (LEEP) in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasized the importance of creating sustainable, well-paying jobs, rather than casual employment, as a solution to social instability.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, reiterated the government’s commitment to job creation and skill development. He noted that LEEP is designed to expand employment opportunities, foster innovation and technology, and equip Nigerians with relevant skills to compete globally.
Other dignitaries present, including Governor Hope Uzodimma and Ministers of Labour, pledged support for LEEP. They recognized its potential to reduce unemployment, stimulate vocational training, and strengthen the economy.
The programme aims to create 2.5 million jobs in two years, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) also commended the initiative, describing it as a turning point for Nigerian youths.
