The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly announced a nationwide strike set to begin on Tuesday, November 14, 2023. This decision was made after a meeting of their leadership in Abuja. The strike is in response to recent events, including the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero and ongoing issues in Imo State.
The assault on Joe Ajaero in Imo State has sparked outrage among organized labor, with allegations of police complicity. The labor unions had given the federal government a five-day ultimatum to replace the police commissioner and address their demands. In response, the police commissioner was redeployed for the sake of neutrality ahead of the state’s governorship election.
The joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of NLC and TUC issued a communique, strongly condemning the actions of the Imo State government, including its failure to implement previous agreements, non-payment of salaries, unjust labeling of workers as “ghost workers,” destruction of the NLC State Secretariat, discriminatory pay practices, and other violations of workers’ rights. They also pointed out the intimidation of trade union leaders, use of violence, misappropriation of union dues, and interference with democratic processes.
As a result of these grievances, the NLC and TUC announced the immediate shutdown of Imo State and called on all workers and affiliates to comply. If their demands are not met, they plan to initiate a nationwide strike on November 14, 2023. They have urged all state councils and affiliates to ensure full compliance with this decision.
