Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has announced a compensation package for victims of the recent tanker explosion in Essa, Katcha Local Government Area, donating ₦1 million to the families of those who lost their lives and ₦500,000 to each injured survivor.

The governor made the announcement on Thursday during a condolence visit to the affected community, where he met local leaders and residents to assess the level of destruction firsthand.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Bago expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and called for caution among residents during emergencies.

“It is heartbreaking that a truck will fall, and people will rush to scoop fuel. It’s both dangerous and criminal — and must stop,” the governor warned.

According to the Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Authority, Abdullahi Arah, the explosion — which occurred on Tuesday around 3:45 p.m. — claimed 42 lives and left 52 others injured.

Arah attributed the explosion to the poor condition of the Bida–Badegi–Agaie road and the area’s high temperature, which contributed to the ignition of spilled fuel.

Governor Bago also revealed that business mogul Aliko Dangote had pledged to repair the Mokwa–Lambata Road, adding that work would begin soon.

In addition, the governor announced plans to build a new primary healthcare center in Essa Community to enhance emergency response and provide accessible healthcare for residents.

“We came to commiserate, to support, and to also remind our people that life is precious. We must stop these risky practices and prioritize safety,” Bago added.
