As part of intensified efforts to tackle insecurity, the Niger State Government has donated 25 operational vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force to bolster patrols, especially in urban centres across the state.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago announced the donation on Wednesday during the graduation ceremony of 50 officers from the newly established Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 23 in Minna. The event was held at the Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi Conference Centre.
According to a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the new vehicles are meant to strengthen the operational efficiency of the Niger State Police Command, particularly in towns with heightened security needs.
“The Niger State government has procured 25 additional vehicles to donate to the Nigeria Police Force, Niger State Command, to boost patrols, especially in major towns of the State,” the statement read.
Governor Bago also revealed plans to collaborate with the police in constructing residential barracks on the outskirts of Minna, with the aim of expanding security coverage in all zones of the state capital.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to security, he stated:
“My administration will continue to support the Nigeria Police and other security agencies as we work ambitiously to address the menace of insecurity in the state.”
The event also marked the official passing out of the first 50 officers from SPU Base 23 Minna, a newly created unit tailored to deliver elite protection services for high-profile individuals.
CSP Hassan Sani, the unit commander, highlighted the intensive training the officers received over the past two weeks, including VIP escort techniques, convoy coordination, firearm handling, martial arts, self-defence, emergency medical care, and fire response.
“The Special Protection Unit is designed to meet the increasing demand for elite protection services,” Sani said.
This initiative follows a broader directive by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to establish dedicated SPU bases to address security needs in various states.
The deployment of both the specialized unit and the new patrol vehicles is expected to significantly enhance the police’s capacity for rapid response and VIP protection across Niger State.
