Alleged ₦5.2m Extortion: NSCDC Commandant General Orders Detention, Transfer of Officers to Abuja

Abuja — In swift response to public outcry, Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has ordered the detention and transfer to Abuja of NSCDC officers allegedly involved in the extortion of a traveler.
The officers were accused of illegally obtaining ₦5.2 million from a young man traveling from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to Akure, Ondo State. The incident came to light via a viral social media post, sparking widespread condemnation.
The action follows a directive from the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who had earlier called for an immediate investigation into the matter.
Unprofessional Conduct Condemned
In an official statement on Wednesday, NSCDC spokesman CSC Afolabi Babawale confirmed the detention order and emphasized that the officers’ conduct was “unprofessional” and in **violation of the Corps’ Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).”
CG Audi also ordered their immediate transfer to the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja, where they will be held in detention pending the outcome of a disciplinary committee investigation.
“Anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the Public Service Rules (PSR),” Audi stated. “We will ensure accountability and transparency in our disciplinary process.”
Public Reassured
CG Audi further urged the public not to lose trust in the NSCDC, reassuring citizens that no one involved in corruption or misconduct would be shielded.
“We are committed to purging the Corps of bad eggs. No one will be spared. Any officer found guilty will be punished accordingly to serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.
The case underscores the government’s renewed effort to maintain accountability and discipline within Nigeria’s paramilitary agencies.
