IJEBU-ODE, OGUN STATE — Nigeria has lost another towering figure in its leadership history, as Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
His death came just hours after the passing of his close friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, marking a day of double national mourning.
Oba Adetona was one of the longest-serving monarchs in Africa, having ascended the throne at the youthful age of 26 on April 2, 1960. His 64-year reign transformed Ijebuland into a model of cultural strength, economic development, and peaceful coexistence.
A Monarch Who Redefined Leadership
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona’s leadership style blended tradition with modernity, advocating boldly for constitutional roles for traditional rulers, speaking out during military regimes, and supporting Nigeria’s democratic development.
He was known for his outspokenness on national governance, commitment to ethical leadership, and devotion to public service far beyond the palace.

Ogun State Governor Mourns a Royal Icon
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State announced the monarch’s death in a heartfelt statement:
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large.”
He continued:
“It is indeed double sadness that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors on the same day former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away.”
Governor Abiodun praised the monarch for his visionary leadership, which made Ijebuland a beacon of progress, blending cultural preservation with modern development.
Final Rites and Burial
The burial of Oba Adetona is set to take place today in Ijebu-Ode, drawing dignitaries from across Nigeria and the diaspora to honour a royal father whose life was defined by service, wisdom, and legacy.
