Ogun Tanker Fire Victim Dies, Nursing Mother Hospitalized

A devastating tanker fire incident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the life of Mercy Emmanuel, a mother of four, and left a nursing mother hospitalized with severe burns. The incident occurred last Wednesday when a petrol-laden tanker overturned near a commercial bank in the Ibafo area, leading to a fire that spread through a drainage system into a nearby community.

Eyewitnesses reported that the driver likely fell asleep, losing control of the tanker, which resulted in the crash and subsequent explosion. The fire impacted several buildings, shattering windows and damaging structures.

Mercy Emmanuel, who attempted to flee the inferno, tragically fell into a fire-engulfed drainage, leading to fatal burns. Her husband, Ismail Emmanuel, shared that efforts to save her life were hindered by the unaffordable N6 million deposit required by a hospital in Lagos. Despite moving her to the Gbagada General Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

The body of Mercy has been placed in a private morgue, and her grieving husband has called on the government for support during this difficult time.

Another victim, known as Iya Ada, suffered burns while attempting to save her children from the fire. The incident destroyed household items and has left the family unable to return home as she continues to receive medical care.

The victims of the fire have pleaded with Governor Dapo Abiodun for assistance after losing vehicles and property, which served as their primary means of livelihood.

In response, Governor Abiodun extended condolences to the affected families and emphasized the importance of caution by tanker drivers to prevent future tragedies.
