Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the recent violent attacks that have claimed 24 lives across the state.
The first incident occurred in Gbelemotin, Ovia South-West LGA, where a clash between cocoa farmers and suspected thieves resulted in 22 deaths. The violence, which started on Thursday night, escalated into Friday morning when sympathizers of the victims launched a counterattack, leading to more casualties. Reports suggest the death toll is higher than the seven initially announced by the Edo State Police Command.
In a separate attack, suspected herders killed two residents—Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello—on Monday in Okpekpe, Etsako East LGA.
Governor Okpebholo, through his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, expressed deep concern over the violence and reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for lawlessness. He assured that all perpetrators would be brought to justice.
“The devastating attack on seven farming communities in Ovia South-West, which left 22 people dead and several others injured, was reportedly carried out by militants. They also destroyed buildings and farm produce worth millions of naira,” the statement read.
In response, the governor has ordered the deployment of additional security personnel to the affected areas to prevent further violence. He also promised support for victims and affected communities.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Edo residents. We will work closely with security agencies, traditional leaders, and community members to prevent future attacks,” Okpebholo stated.
He urged residents to remain calm and assured them that the government is doing everything possible to restore peace and stability in the state.
