Preparations for the coronation of Oba Rashidi Ladoja, former Oyo State governor and Olubadan-designate, have officially commenced with interdenominational prayers at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area.
The prayers, held on Monday, were attended by top members of the Olubadan-in-Council, including Otun Balogun, Oba Kolawole Adegbola; Ashipa Balogun, Oba Dauda Azeez; and Ekaarun Olubadan, Oba Adebayo Akande, alongside other dignitaries.
Oba Ladoja is set to be crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, 2025, at a grand ceremony at Mapo Hall, Ibadan, where he will receive the staff and instrument of office. The event is expected to attract dignitaries nationwide, including President Bola Tinubu.
📌 Smooth Transition Unlike Predecessor
Balogun of Ibadan-designate, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, assured that Ladoja’s coronation would be without rancour, unlike the controversy surrounding the emergence of his predecessor, the late Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7 at age 90.
Ajibola explained that Ladoja’s emergence followed a smooth process, emphasizing his communication and readiness to assume the throne. He noted that the Olubadan stool is unique, with succession determined through two clear lines — the Otun line and the Balogun line.
“There is no dispute. It’s destined, and the throne has been created by God. Everybody is happy with the type of man coming to become Olubadan,” Ajibola said.
🛐 Prayers for Peace and Development
At the interfaith service, prayers were offered by Christian, Muslim, and traditional leaders for a peaceful and prosperous reign.
The President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Ajeniyi Ajewole, expressed optimism that Ladoja’s reign would bring peace and development to Ibadan.
Former Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Sunday Makinde, urged the new monarch to promote harmony among the city’s three major religions.
The Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Abdulganiyu Agbotomokekere, also prayed for peace, progress, and stability throughout Ladoja’s reign.
Highlights of the event included traditional Iyere Ifa renditions, Christian Psalms readings, and Quran recitations.
🌍 Looking Ahead
As Ibadan prepares for the historic coronation, many residents and leaders have expressed joy that a man of political and traditional stature like Oba Rashidi Ladoja is ascending the revered Olubadan throne.
