The Oyo State Police Command has called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant as schools across the state reopen for the 2025/2026 academic session.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Tuesday, the police stressed the importance of parents knowing their children’s teachers, school staff, and peers.
“The growing incidents of abuse, particularly against girls, are concerning. Stay alert for any warning signs from your children to help protect them before it’s too late,” the statement read.
Parents were also advised to familiarise themselves with school bus drivers and security personnel for better child safety. Any concerns or reports can be directed to the Oyo Police Control Room via +234 808 176 8614.
This call comes as schools nationwide resumed on September 15, with pupils in some states returning to renovated classrooms while others resumed in poorly maintained facilities. In Oyo State, the Ministry of Education dismissed rumours of a postponement and confirmed that schools reopened in line with the official calendar.
The police further urged parents to pay attention not only to academics but also to the safety and well-being of their children both in and out of school premises.
In Lagos, the harmonised school calendar indicated that the first half of the term runs from September 15 to October 31 (34 days), while the second half runs from November 10 to December 19 (30 days).
The Lagos Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, also encouraged pupils to embrace learning with dedication and enthusiasm.
“On behalf of the Lagos State Government, we extend a warm welcome to all students. Approach this new session with zeal, discovery, and a thirst for knowledge. May this year bring growth and excellence,” he said.
