PANDEF Urges President Tinubu to Act Swiftly on Coastal Flooding Crisis
The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), led by respected elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, has issued a strong appeal to President Bola Tinubu, urging immediate intervention to safeguard Nigeria’s coastal states from the threat of severe flooding. In a statement delivered by its National Secretary, Dr. Alfred Mulade, PANDEF emphasized the critical nature of the situation, highlighting that time is of the essence to avoid a disaster that could endanger millions of lives.
PANDEF called for several key actions, including reinforcing and upgrading flood defenses, evacuating communities in high-risk areas, rapidly deploying emergency relief, and providing long-term rehabilitation support for affected regions. The group also stressed the importance of constructing shelters on higher ground to accommodate displaced persons.
The forum warned that the predicted flooding poses an existential threat to states like Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Edo, and urged the Federal Government to take the situation seriously to prevent widespread loss of life and property.
PANDEF’s appeal underscores the need for swift and comprehensive government action to protect vulnerable communities in Nigeria’s coastal regions.
