PDP Postpones Thursday’s NEC Meeting for Ondo Governorship Poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, originally set for 24 October 2024, to 28 November 2024. The decision aims to prioritize efforts for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, scheduled for 16 November 2024.

This announcement came after a consultative meeting led by the PDP Governors’ Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. The gathering included the party’s National Working Committee, National Assembly leadership, and the Forum of former PDP governors.

A communiqué released after the meeting emphasized the need for unity as the party prepares to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State. The statement read, “The postponement is to ensure that the party approaches the forthcoming Ondo gubernatorial elections with the unity and strength required to unseat the struggling APC government in the state.”

Governor Mohammed called on party members to avoid divisive remarks that could hinder the PDP’s unity, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections. He also affirmed his support for the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

Internal Party Dynamics and Court Cases

A faction supporting Governor Mohammed had previously sought a court order to prevent the cancellation of the NEC meeting. However, Governor Mohammed expressed his endorsement of Damagum’s leadership during a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at calming tensions within the party.

The meeting was attended by five of the party’s 13 governors, including those from Osun, Zamfara, Rivers, and Plateau states. This move follows a successful resolution of internal disputes by the Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led Reconciliation Committee, enabling the party to focus on its goals for nation-building.

In his remarks, Governor Mohammed stressed the importance of unity, stating, “We will resist any attempt to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. We will use our experience since 1999 to provide Nigerians with a viable alternative platform.”

As the PDP gears up for the Ondo State governorship race, it aims to present a unified front and position itself as a formidable opposition in Nigeria’s political landscape.
