The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning to groups and individuals planning to protest around Aso Rock Villa and its environs over the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the warning followed a Federal High Court order restraining any form of protest within or around the Aso Rock area.
Hundeyin explained that the order, issued on October 17 in a case between the Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 others, prohibits any demonstration around Aso Rock, the National Assembly Complex, Force Headquarters, the Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
“All intending protesters and counter-protest groups are strongly advised to avoid restricted areas and refrain from any act capable of provoking confrontation or disturbing public order,” Hundeyin stated.
He assured that the Police Force would ensure unhindered traffic flow, protection of lives and property, and the security of law-abiding citizens across the Federal Capital Territory.
The police warned that anyone who uses protests as a cover to incite violence, carry weapons, vandalize property, or engage in kidnapping or other crimes would be arrested and prosecuted under criminal and terrorism laws where applicable.
Hundeyin further cautioned that individuals inciting unrest through social media would be traced and prosecuted using digital evidence.
He added that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and other operational commanders to strictly enforce the court order and maintain strong security deployments at strategic points in Abuja.
“We urge protest organizers and participants to respect the law, avoid restricted zones, and express their grievances through lawful channels,” Hundeyin added.
The police assured residents that adequate security measures have been put in place to protect lives and property, urging law-abiding Nigerians to go about their normal activities without fear.
