Rivers State Political Shift: 27 Lawmakers Commit to APC Agenda

In the midst of the ongoing political intricacies in Rivers State, discussions across the nation are heavily focused on the political landscape. One notable figure in this dynamic scenario is Enemi George, a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Having defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), George firmly asserted that there is no intention of returning to his former party.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, George elucidated on the commitment of the members who switched allegiances to stand by the APC. He emphasized that the 27 lawmakers who moved to the APC are dedicated to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

“We have crossed that Rubicon. We have moved to the APC. We voted for the President, and if we find Mr. President worthy of our votes, then I think we should find him worthy of our support,” stated George. He further expressed their determination to collaborate with the President within the framework of the Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure the fulfillment of Nigerians’ expectations. According to him, they have decisively joined the APC, and there is no turning back.

The political turmoil in Rivers State stems from the discord between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. This discord led to a split among lawmakers in the House, with 27 of them defecting from the PDP to the ruling APC—a party where Wike serves as a minister in the central government.

The situation escalated to the point where the governor faced impeachment notices, the Assembly complex was demolished, and there was a wave of resignations by pro-Wike commissioners in Fubara’s cabinet. However, a resolution appeared to have been achieved after a meeting between Tunubu and the warring parties on Monday.

George shed light on the peace meeting, indicating that over 150 individuals, including members of the National Assembly, state elders, and others, participated. He narrated how President Bola Tinubu facilitated the negotiation process, offering both parties the opportunity to agree or dispute each item under consideration. The resolution was reached through deliberations, and all parties signed a document indicating their approval. The governor and the Speaker expressed commitment to the agreement, marking a significant step forward in resolving the political impasse.
