Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim insists he has “no regrets” about joining the club despite the difficult season he has endured since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November.
Amorim, who left Sporting Lisbon earlier than planned to accept the United job, has faced an uphill task. United currently sit 15th in the Premier League, having won just six matches under his leadership, and are guaranteed to record their lowest points total in the Premier League era.
Ahead of United’s trip to Bournemouth on Sunday — a crucial match as the Red Devils aim to avoid their worst league finish since their 1973-74 relegation — Amorim reflected on his decision.
“I have no regrets, not at this moment,” Amorim said.
“If you asked me like four months ago, with all the problems, maybe I would have thought it better to start fresh next season.
“But today, I feel this suffering is preparing us for the future. It’s tough now, but this period might be the most important time for Manchester United in the coming years.”
Amorim emphasized that, despite the hardship, leading Manchester United is the pinnacle of any manager’s career, and he remains committed to rebuilding the team.
United’s hopes of salvaging their season rest on the Europa League, where they face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals. Amorim also looks to avenge a humiliating 3-0 loss to Bournemouth earlier this season.
Despite poor results, Amorim has retained the support of United’s fanbase — something he does not take for granted.
“I think that is special,” he said. “People understand what we are trying to do. But next season, if we don’t show progress, I know that patience will run out.”
Addressing the January transfer window, Amorim defended the decision to loan Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa, where the forward has rediscovered his form.
“In January, we lost players and didn’t bring in new ones. That was a risk,” he acknowledged. “But here, sometimes, there are bigger priorities than just scoring more goals this season.”
