Rudiger Apologizes After Throwing Object at Referee in Copa del Rey Loss

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger faces the prospect of a lengthy suspension following his red card incident during last night’s Copa del Rey loss to FC Barcelona.

The German international, who started the match for Los Blancos, narrowly escaped conceding a penalty late in regular time after a challenge on Ferran Torres. However, physical discomfort forced Rudiger off during extra time, and tensions boiled over when Real Madrid conceded a late goal by Jules Kounde.

Visibly frustrated on the sidelines, Rudiger got into a heated altercation with the referee moments before the final whistle. Real Madrid staff had to intervene as Rudiger attempted to confront the official. In a moment of rage, he threw an object toward the referee, leading to a straight red card.

Under Spanish football regulations, Rudiger now risks a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches.

Taking to Instagram after the incident, Rudiger expressed deep remorse for his actions:

“There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that,” he wrote.

“We played a very good game from the 2nd half on – After 111 minutes, I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle, I made a mistake.”

“Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night.”

Rudiger’s apology comes as Real Madrid prepares for critical fixtures ahead, with the team now concerned about losing one of their key defensive pillars for a significant period.
