Russian Drone Strikes on Ukrainian Hospital Kill Eight, Injure Eleven in Sumy

At least eight people were killed, and eleven others injured, in two consecutive Russian drone attacks on a medical center in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, officials confirmed. The initial strike on Saturday morning killed one person, followed by a second attack during the evacuation of patients and staff, according to Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Telegram that Shahed drones were used in the strikes, which devastated the hospital, where 86 patients and 38 staff were present. The first attack occurred around 7:35 am, with the second strike following at 8:25 am, targeting rescuers and evacuees.

The volunteer group Dobrobat, working on-site during the strikes, shared harrowing footage showing smoke, explosions, and people scrambling for safety as alarms blared. “People are just lying on the street dead,” one volunteer said.

In response, Ukraine’s air force claimed it intercepted 69 of 73 Russian drones launched overnight, as well as two of four missiles aimed at Kyiv and surrounding areas.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported shooting down five Ukrainian drones over the Belgorod and Kursk regions.

The strikes came days after President Zelenskyy visited the United States to secure further military support. US President Joe Biden pledged an additional $8 billion in aid, including Joint Standoff Weapons (JSOW) to bolster Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities.

The situation in Sumy underscores the relentless violence as both sides continue to engage in cross-border attacks.
