Details have emerged about Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, and his six-month prison sentence after being convicted for spraying naira notes in public. The controversial cross-dresser was first taken to Ikoyi Custodial Centre on April 12, 2024, but was quickly moved to Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre after attracting significant public attention. Sources revealed that Bobrisky’s movement between prisons was highly coordinated to minimize exposure to other inmates.
Insiders claim Bobrisky may have been housed in a “special cell,” a facility reserved for high-profile prisoners or those deemed at risk. These cells are often lavishly furnished by inmates themselves, with some paying large sums to secure this treatment. However, Nigerian Correctional Service spokesperson Abubakar Umar denied any preferential treatment, insisting all inmates are treated equally.
Bobrisky’s sentence followed his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in April 2024 for money laundering and mutilating naira notes. Although initially charged with six counts, the EFCC struck out two charges after reaching an agreement. On April 12, Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the remaining charges and was sentenced to six months in prison.
However, new allegations surfaced following his release, including claims that Bobrisky spent his sentence in a private flat near the prison after paying N15 million to EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges. The accusations were made by social media activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, who further alleged Bobrisky owed a creditor N4 million, borrowed to furnish a private apartment during his sentence. Bobrisky has denied these claims, calling the allegations false.
In response to the growing scandal, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior has launched an investigation into the allegations. Several senior prison officials have been suspended as part of the probe.
As the controversy unfolds, human rights activists are raising concerns about corruption in Nigeria’s correctional system, calling for accountability and transparency. They warn that unchecked corruption undermines the country’s justice system, urging authorities to take swift action to address the claims.
Despite the scandal, Bobrisky remains defiant, boasting of his newfound freedom and denying any wrongdoing. The investigation continues as Nigerians await the outcome.
