On Thursday, there were rumours that Chief Timipre, the minister of state for petroleum resources, had quit his job to run for governor of Bayelsa State. Still, senior officials in his ministry were unable to confirm this.
The officials refused to clarify whether Sylva had resigned, despite acknowledging that the minister was obliged by APC rules to have done so about 30 days before the governorship primary on April 14, 2023.
“I cannot confirm whether he has quit since I have not seen his resignation letter. But as you are aware, the party’s rule requires that one resigns for at least 30 days before the primary.
I am unable to confirm whether he has submitted a letter of resignation to the President, but the fact remains that he is running for governor of Bayelsa State, according to a reliable source at the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources who asked to remain anonymous due to a lack of authorization.
In the past, from 2008 to 2012, Sylva presided over Bayelsa for one full term. He belonged to the People’s Democratic Party at the time.
During Sylva’s tenure as governor, the PDP—now an opposition party—was in charge of the Federal Government.
According to a recent report, some APC members in Bayelsa State have asked the party’s national leadership to disqualify Sylva from running in the party’s governorship primary because he has refused to give up his job as a minister.
The report stated that party members from 43 Wards in Ekeremor, Ogbia, Sagbama, Kolokuma/Opokuma and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas of the state, in a petition to the party national leadership, pointed out that at the time the minister was screened, he had not resigned.
Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, has announced his resignation, according to Bashir Ahmad, Special Assistant to the President on Digital Media.
The minister resigned, according to a tweet from Ahmad on Friday, to run in the November 11, 2023, Bayelsa State governorship election.
In order to run in the upcoming Bayelsa governorship election, former Bayelsa state governor and minister of state for petroleum resources, H.E. Timipre Sylva, resigned from his position.
