Suicide bomber kills five outside Afghanistan bank

February 11, 2025

11th February 2025

A suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a bank in Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, on Tuesday, killing five people, including Taliban security forces, and injuring seven others, police confirmed.

The attack targeted civilians and government workers waiting in line to withdraw their salaries. Police spokesman Jumadin Khaksar stated that among the casualties were members of the Taliban security forces, civil servants, and other civilians.

“The Kunduz Province Police Command is working with relevant authorities to identify and bring those responsible to justice,” Khaksar added.

The explosion follows a similar attack in March last year when a suicide bomber killed at least three people outside a bank in Kandahar, an attack later claimed by the regional Islamic State (IS) affiliate.

While no group has claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s bombing, IS remains a significant threat in Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, which significantly reduced insurgent attacks. Security agencies continue to monitor and respond to potential threats across the country.
