Nigeria international and Super Eagles winger, Samuel Chimerenka Chukwueze, has lost his mother, Mrs Sarah Chukwueze.
The sad development was first made public by the footballer’s brother, David Chukwueze, who shared a series of emotional tributes on Instagram, expressing the family’s grief and difficulty in coming to terms with the loss.
Although Samuel Chukwueze did not immediately confirm the news himself, his brother’s posts revealed the depth of the family’s pain.
In one emotional message, David wrote, “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP mum.”
In another post, he added, “My forever love just left me without saying goodbye,” while also lamenting that she did not live to carry her grandchild.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) later confirmed the passing in an official statement issued on Thursday, revealing that Mrs Chukwueze died after a brief illness.
“The National Sports Commission is deeply saddened by the confirmed passing of Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, mother of Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze,” the statement read.
The Commission noted that the death had already been publicly announced by members of the Chukwueze family.
“The Commission has been informed that Mrs Chukwueze passed away following a brief illness, a loss that has been publicly shared by members of the Chukwueze family,” it stated.
The NSC extended its condolences to the AC Milan winger and his family, describing Mrs Chukwueze as a strong support figure throughout her son’s football career.
“Across Nigerian sport, the role of family remains central to the character and resilience shown by elite athletes. Mrs Chukwueze’s influence on the personal journey of her son and her support for his professional career are acknowledged and respected by the sports community,” the Commission said.
It added that it stands in solidarity with Samuel Chukwueze during the period of mourning.
“The National Sports Commission stands with Samuel Chukwueze and his family at this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
