Tinubu Cancels National Broadcast, Will Address Nigerians from National Assembly on June 12

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cancelled his earlier scheduled national broadcast to commemorate Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day. Instead, he will address Nigerians from the chambers of the National Assembly during a special joint session on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The change was announced in a statement released on Wednesday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations. He explained that the president’s participation in the joint session made the national broadcast unnecessary.
“Due to President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled. President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” the statement read.
While the national broadcast and the traditional military parade have both been cancelled, other events scheduled to mark Democracy Day will go on as planned.
A separate notice sent to journalists confirmed that the military parade originally slated for June 12 has also been scrapped. No official reason was given for that cancellation.
President Tinubu is expected to speak at the joint session at 12:00 p.m., followed by a Democracy Day Public Lecture at 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The lecture will be covered exclusively by accredited State House correspondents.
The theme for this year’s Democracy Day is:
“Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The revised schedule released by the Inter-Ministerial Committee includes:
- Cancelled: National Broadcast at 7 a.m.
- Cancelled: Democracy Day Parade
- Confirmed: President’s address at the National Assembly Joint Session – 12 noon
- Confirmed: Public Lecture – 4 p.m., State House Conference Centre
