President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their extraordinary comeback win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), speaking to the team via video call shortly after the final whistle.

In a thrilling match at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Nigeria came from 2-0 down to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2, securing a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Addressing the team in their dressing room, President Tinubu expressed deep national pride and personal joy over the Falcons’ performance, stating:

“We are very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You’ve lifted our spirits, especially for the younger generation. You will be celebrated.”

The President singled out match heroes Esther Okoronkwo—who sparked the comeback with a successful penalty—Folashade Ijamilusi, who netted the equalizer, and Jennifer Echegini, who sealed the win with the third goal. He also gave special praise to team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Tournament MVP.

“Esther, Shade, Jennifer, and my very, very big regards to Rasheedat. That penalty kick was courageous. A 10th WAFCON title is no small feat—for Nigeria and for Africa.”

Tinubu pledged to host the team in Abuja, celebrating their continental dominance upon their return.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the team, thanked the President for ensuring the timely payment of bonuses and allowances and promised to bring the trophy home.

“Thank you so much for the payment. We appreciate you, Sir, and we are coming to give you the cup when we get back.”

President Tinubu responded with enthusiasm, saying he looked forward to their homecoming and wished them a safe journey.
