President Bola Tinubu has praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” whose impact on Nigeria remains significant.
In a tribute marking Obasanjo’s 88th birthday, Tinubu recognized his role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, both as a military and civilian leader. He also noted that while Obasanjo’s interventions in national affairs are sometimes controversial, they have influenced public policies and held leaders accountable.
Highlighting key moments in Obasanjo’s career, Tinubu recalled his role in ending the Nigerian Civil War in 1970 and his leadership following General Murtala Muhammed’s assassination in 1976. He also commended Obasanjo for overseeing Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1979 and later serving as a civilian president from 1999.
Beyond Nigeria, Tinubu described Obasanjo as a respected global figure in peacekeeping and governance advocacy. He prayed for Obasanjo’s continued strength and wisdom, acknowledging his ongoing contributions to national and African affairs.
