By Vincent Ujumadu | Ogidi, Anambra State
Tragedy struck the Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, as five children from the same family lost their lives to suspected food poisoning, leaving their mother critically ill.
đ˛ A Family Meal Turns Deadly
The heartbreaking incident reportedly began after the children consumed a meal prepared by their mother. The family patriarch, 79-year-old retired soldier Robinson Arinze Aghalu, narrated how the children began to exhibit severe symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, and general distress shortly after eating.
âWe rushed them to different hospitals, but five of them didnât make it,â said Pa Aghalu, mourning the loss of his children.
The victims were taken to facilities including a nearby maternity clinic, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and Crown Hospital, but all efforts to save them proved futile.
đĽ Motherâs Condition and Doctorâs Report
The mother, who also consumed the meal, began experiencing similar symptoms and is currently receiving treatment. A doctor managing her case suggested that food poisoning was the likely cause.
One of the children survived only because he was staying with a relative at the time of the incident.
đ Grief, Support, and Appeal for Help
The devastating loss has thrown the Aghalu family into mourning. Friends, neighbors, and relatives have rallied around to offer condolences and support. A relative disclosed that:
âOnly one child is left. The family is shattered, and weâre doing our best to help.â
The family is now appealing for financial assistance to cover medical expenses and other immediate needs. Pa Aghaluâs bank details have been circulated by well-wishers for anyone willing to support.
