Why Bobrisky Was Separated from Other Inmates: Prison Experts Explain

Prison officials have explained why controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, was separated from other inmates during his time at the correctional facility. Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, Bishop Kayode Williams, Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, clarified that Bobrisky was kept in protective custody due to his transgender appearance, which posed a safety risk among the general inmate population.

“There are certain accommodations for condemned prisoners and those sentenced to death, who must not mingle with others,” Williams stated. Regarding Bobrisky’s situation, he explained, “They provided him with a special place for protective custody because his appearance could put him in danger. His feminine look could attract unrepentant homosexual inmates, creating a serious security risk.”

Former National PRO of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Francis Enobore, supported Williams’ explanation, emphasizing that the service profiles each inmate to ensure their safety and that of the prison environment. However, Enobore denied rumours of Bobrisky receiving special treatment, stating, “There’s no such thing as a private apartment in prison.”

The controversy arose when social media personality Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, shared a voice note alleging that Bobrisky’s godfather arranged for him to serve his sentence in a private apartment after his conviction for abuse of naira notes. In response, two deputy controllers at Kirikiri Medium Custodial Centre were suspended due to bribery allegations related to Bobrisky’s case.

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board has since launched an investigation into the claims.
