Despite being in red-hot form for Galatasaray, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen will likely not be donning a Manchester United jersey next season. The Premier League giants have reportedly ruled him out of their summer transfer targets, largely due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and his massive wage demands.
Introduced in the 2015/16 season, the EPL’s PSR limit clubs to losses of no more than £105 million over a three-year period. These rules have already affected clubs like Everton, who were hit with a points deduction last season for financial breaches.
Osimhen Too Expensive for United’s Budget
Osimhen, who is currently on loan from Napoli and shining at Galatasaray with 30 goals and 7 assists in 35 games, was once seen as an ideal fit to solve United’s striker woes. However, the club is now focused on more financially viable targets like:
- Matheus Cunha (Wolves) – £62.5m release clause
- Liam Delap (Ipswich Town) – £30m release clause if Ipswich are relegated
Transfer insider David Ornstein confirmed that United’s focus has shifted.
“If Manchester United are to look at others, I’m assured it will not be Victor Osimhen,” Ornstein told NBC Sports.
High Wage Demands a Deal-Breaker
Reports suggested United had offered Osimhen up to €20 million per year, equivalent to about £660,000 per week before tax in the UK — a figure that would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.
According to Turkish journalist Ali Naci Küçük, both Manchester United and Juventus offered Osimhen a net salary of £17.1 million per year (around £330,000 per week after tax). However, such numbers, coupled with the need to trim United’s wage bill, have pushed the Red Devils to reconsider.
Focus Shifts to Internal Options
With Osimhen off the table, United may stick with existing talent like Rasmus Hojlund and instead focus on bolstering other key areas of the squad.
Despite reports suggesting Osimhen has agreed to a summer move, the club’s current financial reality makes such a deal unlikely under PSR constraints.
