As Nigeria marks Workers’ Day, Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the southwest, has warned that mere salary increases will be ineffective unless the soaring inflation rate is addressed.

Ajadi, an employer and vocal supporter of the labor movement, issued a statement on Wednesday celebrating Nigerian workers while highlighting their enduring economic struggles.

“Salary increases alone will not alleviate their suffering without corresponding value. To enable workers to enjoy the fruits of their labor, the current inflation must be curbed,” Ajadi said.

Inflation vs. Salary Adjustments

He emphasized that real economic relief can only come if governments at all levels adopt innovative, sustainable measures to tame inflation and boost workers’ purchasing power.

“Workers deserve to live dignified lives. We must go beyond wage reviews and focus on making essential goods and services affordable,” he said.

Tribute to Labor’s Role

Ajadi used the opportunity to applaud Nigerian workers for their resilience and cooperation, noting that labor remains central to nation-building.

“Labor creates wealth for the nation. Nigerian workers deserve respect, appreciation, and actionable support for their sacrifices and contributions,” he added.

He urged the federal and state governments to stabilize the economy, reduce prices of essential goods, and ensure that salary increments are matched with real value.
