Former England captain Wayne Rooney has warned that Tottenham Hotspur are now firmly in a relegation battle following their continued poor run in the Premier League.
Rooney’s comments came after Spurs suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, extending their winless streak to seven matches.
The result leaves Thomas Frank’s side in 15th position, just six points above the relegation zone, raising serious concerns about their survival prospects.
Rooney Raises Alarm Over Spurs’ Form
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney admitted that Tottenham’s current form makes their situation worrying.
“You’d have to say they are in a relegation battle with their current form,” Rooney said.
“West Ham have been in form, Nottingham Forest pick up results here and there. You can’t think they’re not in trouble.”
He added that Spurs will now be forced to keep a close eye on the teams below them.
Romero’s Red Card Worsens Spurs’ Problems
Tottenham’s difficulties were made worse when captain Cristian Romero was sent off in the first half for a late tackle on Casemiro — his sixth red card in a Spurs shirt.
While Rooney felt the decision was harsh, he criticised Romero’s discipline.
“I can see why it’s been given, but it’s a little harsh,” he said.
“Sometimes you lose your head, and he’s done that throughout his time at Tottenham.”
Controversial Comments Add Pressure on Coach
Romero’s dismissal came shortly after he criticised Tottenham’s management on social media, calling it “disgraceful” that only 11 players were fit for their recent draw with Manchester City.
Rooney believes such remarks have increased pressure on head coach Thomas Frank.
“When you’re vocal like that, you’ve got to back it up with performances,” Rooney added.
“All it does is bring more pressure on the manager.”
Spurs Face Tough Fight for Survival
With several teams below them picking up points, Tottenham now face an intense battle to avoid being dragged deeper into the relegation zone.
Unless their form improves quickly, Rooney believes Spurs may be involved in a survival fight until the final weeks of the season.
