Former Nigeria head coach José Peseiro has praised Ademola Lookman for matching the influence of Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles, describing the winger as a rising leader in the national team.
Speaking in an interview with Marca, Peseiro said Lookman’s recent performances, especially at major tournaments, have placed him on the same level as Osimhen in terms of impact.
“Osimhen was the star, but Lookman has not been behind him. In fact, he has scored more goals. Now they are both key figures,” Peseiro said.
Strong AFCON Performances
Lookman has been outstanding for Nigeria in recent editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, contributing 11 goals and assists in 13 matches. His performances helped the Super Eagles win silver and bronze medals in successive tournaments.
Peseiro noted that Lookman’s consistency has made him one of the most reliable players in the squad.
Success at Club Level
The former coach also pointed to Lookman’s achievements at Atalanta, including his hat-trick in the Europa League final, as proof of his quality.
He believes the forward’s move to Atlético Madrid could mark a defining stage in his career.
“Playing well just days after arriving shows his quality. He still needs time to adapt, but he already looks comfortable,” Peseiro said.
Easy to Manage and Professional
Contrary to claims that Lookman is difficult to handle, Peseiro described him as humble and disciplined.
“Lookman does not act like a star. He is easy to manage when given freedom,” he said.
According to him, the player responds best when trusted and allowed to express his creativity on the pitch.
Career Struggles and Growth
Peseiro revealed that Lookman had earlier faced challenges during spells at Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham, and Leicester City.
He also spoke about the player’s disappointment after being overlooked by England’s youth teams despite winning the U-20 World Cup in 2017.
These experiences, Peseiro said, helped shape Lookman into a stronger and more focused professional.
Improved Physical and Defensive Strength
The Portuguese coach credited Italian football for improving Lookman’s physical fitness and defensive discipline.
“He is now more complete. He can shoot, pass, dribble, defend, and press. He is stronger and more mature,” he said.
Best Playing Position
Peseiro believes Lookman performs best when playing centrally behind the striker, where he can influence games through goals and assists.
“When he plays inside, he is more decisive. That is where he can control matches,” he added.
Future Prospects
With his growing influence for both club and country, Peseiro is confident that Lookman has the potential to become a dominant figure in European football.
“If he continues like this, he can build an era at Atlético Madrid,” he concluded.
