Anambra Investigates Arrested Native Doctors

18th February 2025

The Anambra State government has confirmed the detention and investigation of native doctors suspected of involvement in fraudulent activities, particularly “get-rich-quick” schemes related to “Okeite” practices.

Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said on Tuesday that security agencies are conducting detailed investigations, and those found guilty will face legal consequences.

He explained that the investigation is in line with the 2025 Homeland Law, which aims to eliminate criminal elements and regulate traditional medicine practices. However, the government is only documenting traditional medicine practitioners, not registering or certifying them.

This decision was supported in Monday’s State Executive Council meeting, which also approved several development projects. These include the construction of the Nzam headquarters road in Anambra West LGA at N801.5 million and improvements to Urban Boys Secondary School in Onitsha South LGA.

The government also approved the upgrade of community-built secondary schools to public school standards, with teachers being integrated into the state workforce.

Additionally, Mefor stated that communities should document non-indigenes without imposing charges, treating the process as a social responsibility rather than a revenue-generating effort.
