Brighton & Hove Albion have revealed that they prevented over £100,000 worth of black market ticket sales in just one match day, taking a strong stance against ticket touting.
According to BBC Sport, the Premier League club has introduced cutting-edge anti-fraud technology alongside its first-ever Ticket Investigations Officer, Joseph Sells, to clamp down on inflated resale activity and protect loyal supporters.
Fans Urged to Avoid Third-Party Sellers
Brighton warned fans against purchasing tickets from unofficial sources after hundreds of fake or unauthorised tickets were discovered.
“We have identified hundreds of unauthorised resale tickets today. Based on black market prices, that’s around £100,000 worth of transactions we have stopped from falling into the hands of touts,” Sells explained.
During Brighton’s recent home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, the club intercepted 285 tickets being illegally resold, with a total street value of around £100,000.
The Human Cost of Ticket Touting
One shocking case saw a family pay £6,000 for six Manchester City tickets, only to be turned away at the gates when the tickets were flagged as invalid.
“Stories like this underscore the growing risk fans face when buying from unofficial platforms,” Sells warned.
How Brighton Catch the Touts
The club has deployed bespoke software to monitor suspicious activity. The system flags red signals such as:
- Purchases made with prepaid foreign cards
- Bulk buying under fake identities
- Suspicious resale listings online
Fans caught with unauthorised tickets are informed on the spot, given guidance on reporting fraud to their banks, and where possible, offered legitimate replacement seats from last-minute availability or hospitality allocations.
Premier League’s Wider Fight Against Touting
Brighton’s crackdown reflects a broader Premier League initiative to combat black market ticketing. New regulations are being rolled out, including encrypted digital barcodes designed to make ticket fraud and unauthorised resale more difficult.
