Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have launched an indefinite strike due to persistent power outages affecting their living quarters. 1 Dr. Uthman Adedeji, General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors at UCH, confirmed the strike began on Monday. 2 While the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) recently restored power to the hospital after a prolonged 100-day outage, the reconnection only reached a portion of the residential areas. Prior to the strike, the association had issued a communique stating that members would walk out if full power restoration wasn’t completed by 4 p.m. on Monday. 3 Despite the reconnection efforts, many residences remain without electricity. Dr. Adedeji explained that an emergency meeting of the resident doctors concluded that the partial reconnection was insufficient. Therefore, the doctors have proceeded with their planned strike until all residential quarters have their power supply restored. He acknowledged the UCH management’s efforts to address the issue but emphasized that more work is needed to guarantee uninterrupted service at the hospital. The association has pledged to continuously assess the situation and advocate for the welfare of its members.
