The Edo State chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have engaged in a heated exchange over an alleged plan by the PDP to stage a protest at the Attorney General’s office in Abuja regarding the ongoing governorship election dispute.
Edo APC Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, accused the PDP of trying to influence the tribunal’s proceedings and called on security agencies to prevent any disruption. However, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, dismissed the claims, stating that the rally was peaceful and aimed at ensuring democracy is upheld. He also urged President Bola Tinubu to caution the Edo APC leadership.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has reserved judgment on the PDP and its candidate Asue Ighodalo’s petition challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024, election, which APC’s Governor Monday Okpebholo won.
During the hearing, the PDP presented 19 witnesses and subpoenaed an INEC official to support their claims of over-voting, ballot irregularities, and incorrect collation of results. The respondents—INEC, Okpebholo, and APC—argued that the election was conducted properly and should not be overturned.
Governor Okpebholo’s legal team called one witness, while APC presented four before closing their case. The respondents contended that the PDP’s evidence was weak, lacked substantial proof, and failed to demonstrate widespread irregularities.
After hearing final arguments, the three-member tribunal, led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, adjourned the case, stating that the judgment date would be communicated later.
