Victor Osimhen Wins GQ Sportsman of the Year Award in Turkey After Record-Breaking Season

Super Eagles star and Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen has been named the GQ Sportsman of the Year in Turkey, earning one of the country’s most prestigious sports honours.

Osimhen received the award during a glamorous black-tie ceremony in Istanbul on Wednesday, where GQ Turkey celebrated leading achievers across sports, entertainment, music, and film.

The 26-year-old striker has become a fan favourite since joining Galatasaray, playing a pivotal role in the club’s dominance last season. He scored an incredible 37 goals and registered seven assists in 41 matches, helping the Istanbul giants secure both the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup titles.

His outstanding performances prompted Galatasaray to smash the Turkish transfer record, completing his permanent signing from Napoli for €75 million, the highest fee ever paid by a Turkish club.

Despite battling injuries this season, Osimhen has continued to shine, recording 11 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions.

On the international stage, Osimhen remains one of Nigeria’s most reliable performers. After missing the first four games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, he returned in exceptional form, scoring six goals in five matches to push the Super Eagles into the play-offs.

He also scored twice in the semi-final win over Gabon, although an injury limited his involvement in the decisive final against DR Congo, where Nigeria missed out on a World Cup ticket after a penalty shootout defeat.

Osimhen is expected to lead Nigeria’s attack at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled for December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

While receiving the GQ award, Osimhen expressed deep appreciation to the organisers, his club, and supporters.

“I want to say a big thank you to GQ. Can’t forget my Galatasaray family. This means so much to my family and me. I appreciate everyone who has supported me up to this hour. I will continue to do my best for my family, for Galatasaray, and for fans all over the world,” he said.

Other winners at the event included Turkish actor Aras Aydın (International Achiever of the Year), actress Sinem Ünsal (Woman of the Year), British-Turkish singer Edis (Music Person of the Year), and Bahtiyar Büyükduman (Chef of the Year), among 11 others honoured on the night.
